ECOTECT allows you to run analyses on models imported from Sketch-Up. If you use the right format (explained below), ECOTECT will maintain all your Sketch-Up material assignments, allowing you to auto-convert them to elements in its own library.
1. If you have not already done so, open Sketch-Up and load the model you wish to convert.
First load your model in Sketch-Up.
2. Choose the Export » 3D Model... item in the File menu.
Export model to disk.
3. When the Windows File Save As... dialog appears, make sure you select the OBJ (*.obj) item in the Export type: selector.
Make sure you choose the right format to export.
4. Open up ECOTECT and select the Import » 3D CAD Geometry... item in the File menu.
Prepare to import the newly created file in ECOTECT.
5. Once the Import Geometry... dialog is displayed, choose the Wavefront (*.obj) item in the Files of Type: selector, then click the Choose File... button to locate the .OBJ file you just saved from Sketch-Up.
Select the right format and locate newly created file.
6. You should now see a preview of the model on the left and a list of all the materials assigned to objects within it on the right.
Both the geometry and materials in the .OBJ file are previewed.
7. It is not necessary for this tutorial but, if you wish, you can click on items in the Material column and assign them particular element types or specific materials. For more details, see the separate Auto-Convert Imported Materials tutorial.

8. Next, make sure you 'Uncheck the Invert Y&Z Axis option and set the appropriate scale. In this case, the model was originally drawn in millimetres, so we want to select Millimetre (1:1) in the scale menu. The scale value should now show '1.000'.
Export model to disk.
9. Finally, choose the Open as New button at the bottom of the dialog and, after a short initialisation, the model should be displayed in ECOTECT as shown below.
