The world was first introduced to the dark world of "Black Mirror" in 2013 when two episodes of the mind-bending series were screened at a TV festival for the first time. During an interview with The Guardian, Charlie Brooker, the show's creator and co-runner said, "I can't continue pretending to be a complete outsider."

Unpleasant, scary, and sometimes disturbing the series brings to life the worst possible nightmares the future may have for humanity. What's worse is that the plotlines are based on actual technological development. In just a snap, it can become real.

"Black Mirror" has been a sharp reminder that while technology makes life easier, a million things could and probably would go wrong. That is until Season 5 happened.

Netflix

"If you want to turn a happy ending into an unhappy one, simply flip to any news channel the moment the credits roll."

Charlie Brooker, series creator and co-runner

"If every episode had a bleak, nihilistic ending, the series would be very predictable. Surely one of the delights of an anthology is not knowing what you're going to get."

Annabel Jones, series co-runner

That's how the showrunners tried to appease fans' doubts about the happy endings that begin to creep in on Season 3.

But happy endings were not a deal breaker. "San Junipero," for example, was the highest-rated episode in the entire series on IMDb. It cooked a nice story with incredible imagination of a tech-assisted future of life after… life, and managed to touch the audience emotionally with a seemingly happy ending.

However, in the fifth installment "instead of an underlying point powering the story's core, there is almost nothing," Kathryn VanArendonk from Vulture wrote.

Though still sitting at the intersection of humanity and technology, the new season barely touches on any of the two. The series has "moved from telling future stories to telling right-now stories," as Audra Schroeder from The Daily Dot remarked.

The first episode, "Striking Vipers," is claimed by the BBC as "a total gem," but many viewers did not feel the same way. The story deals with a world where the line between reality and virtual reality is blurred, and sexual identity and love confused. A time when one can experience being in the body of the opposite sex.

"Like the best "Black Mirrors," it's extremely clever, probing questions about identity and happiness bleeding from the virtual world into the more mundane one."

The episode puts a question, or a dilemma, up for discussion, opening the door for arguments and, of course, counterarguments. It failed, however, to take a step further in any direction, merely stopping at an individual level. It missed the mark in showing how virtual reality could influence people's sex lives, or imagining possible scenarios when human stops reproduction due to lack of interest in physical intimacy.

The second episode, "Smithereens," deals with social media addiction, but stops short of digging into the issue itself. It's more of a story about grief over the loss of a loved one resulting from addiction.

But the addiction to the virtual world is so real.

Much scarier things could happen in a world where everyone is glued to their phone other than a car accident caused by looking at your device, which sounds all too real these days.

Starring Miley Cyrus, who admitted feeding into the story her own experience as a teen idol, the third episode, "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too," is basically a dull story about a lonely teenage girl with an equally lonely sister helping her idol get rid of the evil aunt/manager, with some sort of artificial intelligence conjured along the way.

It is easy to see the potential of what the plotline could have been, and easier to pin down all the missed opportunities but that's what they are… missed.

The second half, to a certain point, feels like "a hokey-teen-sci-fi-adventure," as BBC's Hugh Montgomery put it.

And the end, the teen idol beats her evil aunt, breaks free and becomes who she wants to be if it sounds familiar that's because it is… a regurgitated idea.

Not that there's anything intrinsically bad in the story. It's inspiring, actually. It's just, at some point you are not sure if you are watching "Hannah Montana" or "Black Mirror."
