This week I had a pleasure of interviewing Wouter Nys and Sander Valcke, the guys who created Quickdraw. They’re not only a hilarious duo, that clearly get along well, but they are also completely dedicated to their V19 development: Quickdraw. A tool they promise will change the way you think about conceptual building design.

Ever wondered why it’s really easy to construct buildings and rooms in computer games and really hard to do it in CAD? Well, so did Wouter and Sander. That’s how they ended up developing Quickdraw for BricsCAD BIM.

What is Quickdraw?

Quickdraw ( BIMQUICKDRAW) is designed to allow architects to sketch their designs in 3D. So you can start in 3D and stay in 3D throughout the design process. With just a few clicks you can create a building or a room. It really gives an instant feel for room dimensioning and layout creation that just can’t be replicated in 2D. It was first demoed at Bricsys 2018.

The cool thing about Quickdraw is that it remains active when the tool is used. Add or remove walls quickly and let BricsCAD work out the slab shape for you. Create L shaped rooms with just a drag and a click.

It’s also super smart. It uses Magnetic Snapping to snap automatically to existing walls, meaning changing the layout of a building is an absolute doddle. BricsCAD automatically attaches BIM data to slabs and walls and then automatically compiles the structure table, splitting the structure by floor and even identifying buildings. You can then use this panel to hide floors, making editing and viewing easier.

An architect can choose to model freely, by clicking where ever takes his or her fancy, or more accurately, by typing in exact measurements. The room height, slab thickness, and wall thickness are all adjustable.

By quickly clicking the blue + sign, you can create an additional floor. It duplicates the layout of the top floor.

What was the development process for creating Quickdraw? The first iterations of the Quickdraw tool were a far cry from the smooth and elegant one you see today.

The release version of Quickdraw is a smooth, attractive and easy to use tool, but that’s not the way it’s always been. When asked about the first iterations of the drawing Wouter responded:

“It actually looked like a small swimming pool or something, so it was not very attractive.”

The pair then fell about laughing.

How does Quick draw work with other V19 developments?

It’s now easy to re-position walls with BIMDRAG. It works much like the current Push/Pull command, but automatically selects the wall and adjoining walls, to change to dimensions of a room.

Use BIMDRAG to reposition walls

Combine with the new, enhanced Slice tool, to cut walls down and do some really crazy stuff.

The new Connect tool functions really come into their own here. Select faces, even ones that are mitered at an angle and have them automatically connect to the nearest wall or the face of your choice and change the junction style of the corners. Then use Propagate to propagate the junction automatically throughout the model.

The guys assure me that the development is far from over, they have great plans to take it a step further for V20 and in the meantime urge you to try it out and let them know what you think.

“If something isn’t working the way you think it should, then please let us know because we will use that input to make it better” – Sander.
